Today was to be a day spent baking, I started the morning making Caramel dumplings and custard to pair (as a dessert) with the Oxtail I served for lunch. It is a really easy recipe and I was happily beating the dough with the electric egg beater just after 9h00 this morning. When all was mixed, I switched off the beater and tried to remove the dough sticking to the ends with my fingers when the beater started beating again and got my hand stuck between the 2 metal beaters.
At first I couldn't understand what was going on (I did switch it off after all), then I nearly broke the beater in an attempt to get the thing off my hand.
Unbelieving I stared at my freshly beaten left hand as red and then blue wilts appeared on the base of my thumb and little finger. In all the years I've been baking this was a first for me - who's ever heard of freshly beaten hands - I mean a hand isn't even supposed to fit between the two beaters!
Well after the shock wore off (I thought), I asked Lulu if she wanted to help mix the carrot cake ingredients (she used a big spoon)and to my surprise she cleverly pre-measured all the ingredients for me. After everything was mixed and ready for the oven I realised that I accidentally doubled the oil in the cake mix, I baked it anyway hoping that it wouldn't be too noticeable ..... no luck! I'm not sure if the higher oil content caused the cake to bake too hot or something because after the required baking time, the beeper went off and we took it out and lo-and-behold check out the dark brown almost black carrot cake that tastes like it's been deep fried! All in all, this morning turned out to be a baking disaster.
I left the kitchen during lunchtime to rather check on the customers - who thoroughly enjoyed the Oxtail and Dumplings (none the wiser of all the disasters of the morning) - and to give my bruised ego a break, normally my attempts and feats in the kitchen progresses with much less drama, bruising or disaster.
Now I'm sitting in front of the computer with the smell of baking Rye rusks permeating the air - I decided to try one more time to successfully bake something today :) and judging by the smell, it's going much better than this morning.
Tomorrow I'll start fresh and attempt a new carrot cake and a cheesecake, which I'm sure will come out beautifully and without a hitch.

Re baking disasters: just never-ever stuff the hole in the flopped cake with an old pair of pantyhose, covered by icing, and hope nobody orders a slice..... don't trust old Murphy!
